Large copy albumen of a framed composite of 42 portraits of soldiers. Handsomely presented in a patriotic illustrated mat and parcel gilt frame.

A fine period presentation of 42 soldier portraits, all men who served in Company D of the 23rd Massachusetts Infantry, including several officers and line officers in uniform. Below the mat, it is revealed that the print captured an original frame and mat that includes identification for each soldier (full list included below).

Most of the men of Company D enlisted from New Bedford, Massachusetts, in September 1861. After organization, they joined Burnside's Expedition, fighting at the Battle of Roanoke Island and the Battle of New Berne, where several men were wounded in action. They remained stationed in North Carolina, participating in several expeditions, including to Goldsboro and Charleston.

In 1864, the regiment saw heavy action at Drewery's Bluff and Cold Harbor, where several men of Co. D were wounded or killed in action.

The assemblage may have been originally at GAR Post #1 (William Logan Rodman) in New Bedford, Massachusetts, which counted several veterans included as members. It was likely that the original was collected and made in the early veteran period, with the copy made not long after.

A beautiful presentation of a hard-fought group of soldiers.
