A VERY SCARCE HAZARD POWDER CO. CIVIL WAR RELIC
Tin barrel with red and green paint. Embossed to top: "Patent. July 12 1859." Label to opposite reads as follows: "Hazard Powder Company / Hazardville / Conn. / U. S. / Warranted / Government / Proof / Cannon," with a pair of crossed cannons. Approx. 9 1/2 (diameter) x 11 1/2 in.
An early Hazard Powder Co. metal drum of the variety employed by Confederate artillerymen at the Battle of Fort Sumter. Surviving examples of these powder receptacles are significantly less common than Civil War-era wooden powder kegs, and this may be the only extant example to retain an artillery label of this style. The consignor relates that a similar label is held by the Hagley Museum and Library.
