Partly printed document completed in manuscript. Signed by the President of the 6th Congressional District's Board of Surgeons, as well as two examining surgeons. Sherman, Texas, 17 April 1863. 2 pages, 8 1/2 x 5 in. Docketing to verso.
A certificate of disability issued to John C. Anderson, Company E, 9th Texas. He was found unable to perform military duty and discharged due to the following reason: "Injury Right instep from being run over by artilery [sic] wheel — fracture of metatarsal bones — pieces coming out".
While little is known about Anderson himself, he was likely born in 1843 and enlisted at age eighteen in Lamar County. The 9th Texas took part in several important engagements during the war, including the Battles of Shiloh, Perryville, Chickamauga, Allatoona, and Nashville, and also participated in the Atlanta Campaign. By the end of the Civil War in May 1865, the regiment had been severely reduced, with only eight officers and seventy-nine men remaining to surrender to Union forces.
