This photograph of soldiers’ names and initials was originally taken in Libby Prison by Mathew Brady and Alexander Gardner in 1865 after the evacuation of Richmond. Some of the soldiers’ names in this photo include Asa B. Isham and George W. Hill, who were both captured at Yellow Tavern. Isham would be exchanged in December 1864, while Hill was exchanged the following March.
Both Isham and Hill were members of the 7th Michigan Cavalry, led by General George A. Custer. The 7th Michigan fought at the Battle of Gettysburg, where it helped to defeat the 1st Virginia Cavalry and its general J.E.B. Stuart, who would be killed in action at Yellow Tavern, the same battle Isham and Hill were captured.
