A finely composed CDV-size tintype depicting a full-standing Union infantry private, shown in three-quarter profile and holding a long rifle. The soldier wears a regulation Federal infantry frock coat and forage cap, with complete field equipment including a rolled blanket or greatcoat secured atop the knapsack, a cartridge box suspended at the waist, and a canteen slung at the hip. 

Full-length studio views of enlisted men displaying complete infantry gear are increasingly scarce.
