A masterpiece of the genre, this boldly hand-colored portrait presents a striking full-figure likeness of an early-war Union officer in all the martial finery of his rank. While the subject is unknown, several characteristics such as his badge, possibly state-issue insignia of a colonel, and state-issue belt plate may prove helpful in triangulating a definitive identification.
