Silver scallop-bowl sugar spoon. [Natchez, Mississippi]: G. Macpherson. Handle obverse with "NCC" engraved monogram. Handle reverse stamped "G. Macpherson" and finely engraved "Siege of Vicksburg 1863". Approx. length 6 3/8 in.
A silver sugar spoon likely taken as a trophy during the Siege of Vicksburg in 1863. The spoon was crafted by Mississippi silversmith George Macpherson, who operated in Natchez. Originally from Scotland, he was working in Natchez as early as 1843. He opened a shop on Main Street in 1849 that survived the war and operated until 1872.
A fine Mississippi relic.
