Sixth plate tintype. Half leatherette case.
Interesting portrait of an early-War soldier seated in a photographer's studio. Of note is his belt buckle, which is a scarcely seen militia-style plate featuring an eagle motif. These plates date to the 1850s and are rarely seen in Civil War-era photography. The unidentified soldier's fancy epaulettes and artillery-style sword also suggest a militia connection, as many pre-War companies trained as artillery. Regardless, this is a very nice image with interesting and rare content.
