Savage 1861 Navy. .36 caliber ball. Serial number 1177.
6 7/8 inch barrel with conical brass front sight. Metal components are uniformly patinated. Signs of wear are apparent to the cylinder and surrounding frame. Cap nipples are worn but all remain intact. Top of frame clearly marked: "Savage R.F.A. Co. Middletown, Ct / H. S. North Patented June 17 1856 / January 19 1859 May 15 1860," with inspector's mark "H H" stamped to the side of the barrel. Serial number stamp remains legible only to the frame under the grip.
The distinctive action of the Savage 1861 Navy is often compared to double action, as a shooter does not need to manually cock the hammer. Instead, pressing the ring-shaped lever within the trigger guard both cocks the hammer and rotates the cylinder without necessitating a change in hand position, while the trigger located just above releases the hammer. Approximately 20,000 of this model were produced; around 12,000 were obtained by the Union, while the remainder were offered commercially.
