A fine collection of cap and cartridge boxes, all emptied of their original contents, including:
1. Imperial gunpowder flask. Tin with red-painted top and orange paper label. Printed to obverse: "Imperial Gunpowder" with dog flanked by longarm barrels, overall surrounded by roughly symmetrical curling foliates adorned with 5 dog heads, a pair of hunting horns, and a pair of fox tail hunting trophies. Reverse printed: "Manufactured / by / Eureka Powder / Works / New Durham / N.H."
2. A scarce forty-two count pasteboard box for .56 caliber cartridges by Crittenden & Tibbals. Label to top reads as follows: "42 / Metallic Cartridges / for the / Spencer & Joslyn Carbine / No. 56 Navy and Infantry Size. / Manufactured by / Crittenden & Tibbals Mf'g Co., / South Coventry, Conn., [U.S.]" Approx. 4 1/4 x 1 15/16 x 3 1/2 in., in very fine condition.
3. Rare twenty-four-count pasteboard box for .36 caliber Navy revolvers by Ethan Allen & co. Label to top reads as follows: "2 Doz. / Water Proof / No. 56 / Pistol Cartridges / For Navy Revolver, 36-100 Bore. / Manufactured by ETHAN ALLEN & CO. / Allen's Patent, Sept. 25th, 1860." There is some damage to the lid, else a very fine example. Impressions of the original contents remain to the interior lid.
4. Rare twenty-four-count pasteboard box for .36 caliber Navy revolvers by Allen & Wheelock. Label to top reads as follows: "2 Doz. / Water Proof / No. 56 / Pistol Cartridges / For Navy Revolver, 36-100 Bore. / Manufactured by ALLEN & WHEELOCK / Allen's Patent, Sept. 25th, 1860." There is some separation to one of the box's edges, else a fine example. Impressions of the original cartridges can be seen to the interior.
5. One-hundred-count pasteboard box for pistol cartridges by Allen & Wheelock. Label to top reads as follows: "100 / Water Proof / No. 5 / Pistol Cartridges / Manufactured by ALLEN & WHEELOCK / Allen's Patent, Sept. 25th, 1860." The back of the lid is completely separated, albeit present.
6. Fifty-count pasteboard box for metallic cartridges made by Plant. Label to top reads as follows: "Fifty No. 42 / Patent Waterproof / Metallic Cartridges / Manufactured Expressly For / Reynold's, Plant's, and Hotchkiss' / Patent Revolver / Made by Plant's Man[ufactur]ing Co. New Haven, Conn. / And For Sale By / Merlin & Bray, - - New York. / Patent issued July 1[illegible]th 1859 and R[e]issued July 21st 1863." This is a very fine example. The impressions of the base of the cartridges are visible to the interior lid.
7. Fifty-count pasteboard box for metallic centerfire cartridges by National Revolver. Label to top reads as follows: "Fifty No. 1, / Flat Teat. Metallic. / Central Fire Water Proof / National Revolver / Cartridges / D. Williamson's Patent Issued January 5th, 1864." There is some wear to the lid, else a very fine example.
8. Ten-count pasteboard box for .52 caliber Sharps ammunition and caps. Label to top, slightly misaligned, reads as follows: "10 Cartridges / 12 caps / For Sharps' Improved Rifle. / 52/100 caliber. A Superior Quality of Powder is used, made by A. G. Fay, Potter & Dolman, Boston, Mass. Address, / Sharps Rifle Manuf'g Co. / Hartford, Conn." The box is in very fine condition, with some residue left by cartridges to interior.
9. Ten-count pasteboard box for .50 caliber Poultney's cartridges. Label to front of box reads as follows: "10 / Poultney's Patent Metallic / Cartridges / Patented Dec. 15th, 1863. / 12 Caps / for / Smith's Breech-Loading / Carbine. / No. 1. / 50-100 Caliber. / Address, Poultney & Trimble, Baltimore, Md." Top of box is separated, connected only to the back.
10. Ten-count pasteboard box for .50 caliber Poultney's cartridges. Label to top reads as follows: "10 / Poultney's Metallic / Cartridges, / Patented December 15th, 1863; / 12 Caps / for / Gallager's Breech Loading Carbin[e] / 50/100 Calibre." Righthand side of box has been removed, and the remainder of the top is separated, connected only to the back.
11. Fifty-count metallic box for revolver cartridges. Label to top reads as follows: "50 / Metallic Pin-Fire Cartridges / for / Lefaucheux Revolvers. / No. 7 m. / Germany / Braun & Bloom, Manufacturers, Dusseldorf." Impressions of the original cartridges are visible to the interior.
12. Ten-count paper packaging for .54 caliber cartridges made by Burnside. Printed as follows: "10 Cartridges / With 12 Caps, / For the / Burnside / Breech Loading Rifle. / Patented March 25, 1856. / Caliber 54/100 / Made by the / Burnside Rifle Co. / Providence, R.I." Package is slightly torn to upper righthand corner.
13. Paper packaging for .55 caliber cartridges. Printed as follows: "1860. / for Rifle Musket /53 / Bullet .55 Diar. / Wax / Powder 2 1/2 Drs. / Wood Plug." The paper is in fine condition, though the twine has been cut to access the contents.
14. One-hundred-count percussion cap tin. Label to top reads as follows: "J. Goldmark's Percussion Caps. / 100 Foil Lined / F. L. / No. 10 / Central Fire / Theodore Where, / New York." There is some light rust, overall fine condition. Lid is apparently immobile.
