BEAUTIFUL CIVIL WAR ERA SAILOR'S STRAW HAT WITH STAR EMBROIDERY

Civil War naval sailor's straw "Sennit" hat with embroidered starburst medallion at crown. Partial black hat band. Underbrim lined with blue cotton. Edge bound in black or navy fabric. Original liner intact. Housed in glass & wood display case

Provenance: Pat Booth; Norm Flayderman Collection (from Pat Booth's records).

Straw hats, sometimes called "Sennit" hats, had long been permitted as a regulation hat for seamen and officers in the Navy in warm climates. Civil War photography shows a wide range of examples, from floppy private purchase hats to the regulation type, such as this example.

A distinguishing feature of this hat is a five-pointed star embroidered in shades of cream, tan, and olive green on a sky-blue field, and surrounded by five smaller stars affixed to the crown. Such embellishments were common, as sailors frequently had long stretches of idle time on their hands to devote to decorative handiwork.
