Bullet struck wood relic, inscribed "Round Top Gettysburg". Approx. 3 x 1 1/2 x 1 1/2 in.
On 2 July 1863, the second day of the Battle of Gettysburg, Confederate forces launched an unsuccessful attack on the Union left flank at Little Round Top. At some point during the fray, per the old ink inscription, a witness tree was struck by a stray bullet, with the trauma resulting in the burl's formation. The burl and tightly-wedged bullet were eventually removed from the tree, as Gettysburg Battlefield bullet-damaged wood relics became popular souvenirs.
