ROBERT E. LEE (1807–1870) SIGNED CARTE-DE-VISITE PORTRAIT

 

Albumen print on card mount, M. B. Brady & Co.’s National Photographic Portrait Gallery, 352 Pennsylvania Ave., Washington, D.C. (imprint on verso), ca. 1865–68. Standard CDV format, approx. 4 × 2½ in. (10.2 × 6.3 cm). Signed by Lee in brown ink “R E Lee” on the lower mount.

 

A fine, postwar bust portrait of Lee in civilian dress. This view was produced by Matthew Brady’s Washington D.C. gallery from a negative taken during Lee’s visits to the capital after the war.
