EXQUISITE PRESENTATION SWORD GIVEN TO NEW YORK OFFICER WHO WAS TAKEN AS A PRISONER OF WAR

M1850 Presentation Staff & Field Officer's sword. Hartford, Connecticut: Collins & Co., 1862. Ricasso reverse stamped with maker's mark. Blade etched with floral and patriotic motifs. Sword knot attached to knuckle guard. Approx. 38 in., blade approx. 32 in. Complete with metal scabbard with the following engraved: "Lt. F.E. Scripture. / R.Q.M. 7th N.Y.V. Arty. / Presented by the members / of the Q.M. Dept."

A fine example of a Collins & Co. staff & field officer's sword presented to Lt. Frederick E. Scripture of Company C, 7th New York Heavy Artillery. The blade exhibits a dark patina with etchings of floral and patriotic motifs on both sides. The quillon is of an eagle's head, with small "ruby" garnet jewels as the eagle's eyes. Attached to the brass knuckle guard is a sword knot of a similar color to that of the hilt.

Scripture initially mustered into the 7th New York on 11 August 1862, being promoted to commander sergeant of the 7th's Field & Staff a week later. By the beginning of 1863, he was promoted to first lieutenant and quartermaster, a position he held the rest of his military tenure. While serving with the 7th, Scripture was taken as a prisoner of war at the Battle of Spotsylvania Court House's conclusion, where he was confined in Macon, Georgia, and Columbia, South Carolina, for almost a year. He was eventually paroled at Northeast Ferry, North Carolina, on 1 March 1865, a little over two months before he was discharged altogether.
