An outdoor view depicting 5 members of the 29th New York State Infantry alongside Colonel Adolph von Steinwehr. Steinwehr is seated at center; to his direct left, another officer can be seen, adorned with a sash and sword in his lap. The infantry's regimental colors can also be seen on display to the far left.
Adolph von Steinwehr (1822–1877) was a German-born officer who became a Union general during the American Civil War. Born in Blankenburg in the Duchy of Brunswick, he served briefly in the Brunswick army before emigrating to the United States in 1847. At the outbreak of the Civil War, he helped organize German-American volunteers and became colonel of the 29th New York Infantry. Promoted to brigadier general in 1861, he commanded a brigade and later a division in the XI Corps of the Army of the Potomac, participating in major engagements including Chancellorsville and Gettysburg.
The 29th New York Infantry, formed in New York City in June 1861, and was largely made up of German-American volunteers. Under the command of Adolph von Steinwehr, the regiment joined the Army of the Potomac and saw action in major campaigns, including the Peninsula Campaign, Chancellorville, and Gettysburg. The unit was known for its strong ethnic identity as well as participating in both brigade and divisional actions within the XI Corps. After two years of service, the regiment was mustered out in 1863.
