Sauerbier Type-1 cavalry officer's saber. [Newark, New Jersey: Henry Sauerbier, n.d.] Overall approx. 41 in., blade approx. 34 1/4 in. long.
Complete in a gold-washed brass scabbard with large acorn-adorned mounts and drag and the original leaf-engraved throat piece. The botanical oak theme extends to the heavy brass type-1 hilt, with the interiors and exteriors of the knucklebows, the quillon, and the pommel ornately chased with acorns and leaves. Gold gilding is significantly retained by these elements. The blade has taken on a dark tone. The original leather washer and leather grip with 17 wraps of triple-strand gilt brass wire, the center strand twisted, are in fine condition.
The acid-etchings to the blade, light but in the typical Sauerbier style, include foliates to each side and the spine, a sizable "Union" ribband and an eagle holding an "E Pluribus Unum" ribband to the obverse, and a lengthy American flag and large "US" to the reverse. There is no maker's mark, but the sword can be definitively attributed to Sauerbier per the distinctive fuller, grip, pommel cap and spinner nut.
