M1840 Heavy Cavalry Saber. Columbia, S.C.: [William Glaze, ca. 1850 - 1853] Clearly stamped with Glaze's iconic "Columbia S.C." to ricasso. Blade 35 13/16 in. Overall 43 in. long.
One of the 2000 m1840 swords assembled under contract, from imported parts by Schnitzler & Kirschbaum of Solingen, by William M. Glaze. These swords were distributed among South Carolina's militia regiments and subsequently saw use by the Confederates upon the state's secession. Blades produced at the Palmetto Armory during this period were of a quality on par with weapons manufactured in the Northeast United States, with this example serving as no exception.
The leather grip exhibits partial loss, exposing Schnitzler & Kirschbaum's signature cord wrap, and has been liberally lacquered overall. The brass guard exhibits a dark patina, and the blade presents a warm patina with some rust.
