26th O.V.V.I. albumen studio cabinet card view. Columbus, Ohio: Geo. R. Elliot, circa 1880. Publisher's imprint printed to mount verso. Sales imprint printed to mount verso which reads "For Sale By / M. O'Boyle."
A studio view of a musket standing crossed by a flag pole bearing a battered and nearly indiscernible flag. The rifle is supported by a saber with two additional sabers near its base. A drum is centered in the middle of the constructed triangle, bearing a sign with "26th O.V.V.I." on it.
The 26th Ohio Veterans Volunteer Infantry (O.V.V.I) was formed in 1880 as a permanent regimental association and a way to preserve the memories of the 26th regiment, as well as allow the veterans to keep in contact with each other. The 26th Ohio Volunteer regiment was organized in 1861 at Camp Chase in Columbus, Ohio, and mustered out of service in Victoria, Texas, in 1865. It fought mainly throughout the Western theater campaigns and battles of the Civil War.
Nicknamed the "Groundhog" regiment, the O.V.V.I kept comprehensive histories and records of its veterans with the intention of publishing a finalized regimental history. However, by 1895, funding for publication had seemingly been exhausted and the project discontinued. Its organization's iconography is that of a triangle or opening of tent, which is represented in the cabinet card image.
