"Wealth of the South" patriotic token. South Carolina, 1860. Approx. diam. 21 mm. NGC F-511/514b VF 30.
Obverse shows a palmetto tree superimposed upon a sunburst with 15 stars, and a cannon with shot below. Legend reads; "No Submission to the North / 1860." Reverse legend reads: "The Wealth of the South. / Rice Tobacco Sugar Cotton," surrounding the mentioned crops.
A well-struck example of an uncommon Southern patriotic token produced during the secession crisis. These small penny-sized tokens were often worn as necklace charms or attached to a Palmetto Flag hanger.
