U.S. Model 1858 Civil War artillery shell jacket. Dark blue wool, trimmed in red worsted tape, with standing collar, brass-buttoned front, pointed cuffs, and shaped rear skirts with false pocket welts. Cincinnati, Ohio: Cincinnati Depot, Civil War period. Marked "3" and "F. H. Shafer / U.S. Insp. / Cin't OH" to interior right sleeve.
The interior is lined with blue wool and white muslin, with a vertical breast pocket along the edge of the left liner seam. The 12 front buttons per regulation, 4 collar buttons and 4 cuff buttons are all present and are all General Service eagle buttons without backmarks.
