Sixth plate half-length studio portrait ambrotype. N.p., circa 1861-1865. Separated full thermoplastic case.
Tremendous portrait of a southern militia officer armed with an ornate sword. While the photographer touched up the brass elements of the subject with gold gilt, the viewer can still clearly see a "knight's head" design on the sword's pommel. A red silk sash, two-piece brass tongue and wreath buckle, and fancy gold epaulettes were also hand-colored, adding to the subject's somewhat regal appearance.
