This 4-piece collection documents the clerical leadership of the Union Army, featuring four distinct sittings of commissioned chaplains in their characteristic regulation attire. The lot includes a full-length standing study of a young chaplain by W. Snell of Salem, Massachusetts, and a seated study of a bearded officer by R.A. Lewis of New York. A third image by K.W. Beniczky of New York captures an officer in a sharp frock coat posed against a scenic studio backdrop. The collection is anchored by an exceptional study of a chaplain and his wife by the famed San Francisco photographer William Shew, providing a rare look at the domestic life of the military clergy during the mid-19th century.
Chaplains held a unique and often precarious position within the Civil War military hierarchy. Tasked with the spiritual welfare of the troops, they were commissioned officers who functioned without traditional command authority. They were responsible for conducting services, writing letters home for illiterate or wounded soldiers, and providing comfort on the battlefield and in hospitals. Because they often wore plain black frocks or modified officer jackets without the standard shoulder straps of combat officers, their photographic record is distinct and easily recognizable by the lack of brass and the somber, dignified nature of their sittings.
This collection provides a survey of the leading photographic studios of the era, from the coastal cities of Massachusetts and New York to the Western frontier. The William Shew portrait from San Francisco is of particular note, as Shew was one of the premier daguerreotypists and photographers of the American West. These CDVs represent the men who bridged the gap between the violence of the front lines and the religious convictions of the home front.

The collection is in generally excellent condition, featuring strong tonal contrast and sharp detail across the four subjects with minimal fading. The mounts remain structurally sound and exhibit clear, legible photographer imprints from New York, Salem, and San Francisco, showing only typical minor age-related toning and period-clipped corners on several cartes.
