The metal components, including the bayonet and ramrod, exhibit a rich patina. A dusty grey bloom is visible to the stock, particularly the buttstock.
The m1863 type II was the last muzzle-loading longarm to go into production at Springfield. It is distinct from the type I due to its reimplementation of band springs and solid bands and its replacement of the two-leaf rear sight with a single-leaf sight. Following the war, many m1863s were converted into breechloaders.
