M1840 light artillery saber. Chicopee, Massachusetts: Ames Mfg. Co., 1864. Ricasso stamped "[A]mes Mfg Co / Chicopee, / Mass". Ricasso reverse stamped "US / C.E.W. / 1864". Blade 32 in., overall 40 in. long.
Complete in scabbard. The blade has an overall dark patina with significant pitting. The brass guard is also darkly and warmly patinated. Original leather washer, grip leather, and wire wrap remain and are in fair shape.
Unlike their m1840 heavy cavalry counterparts, the m1840 light artillery saber did not see a replacement produced before or during the Civil War. They were the regulation swords of both Union and Confederate mounted artillery units.
