M1860 light cavalry saber. [Tren]ton, N.J.: [Emerso]n [& Silve]r, 186[?]. Ricasso with a worn Emerson & Silver mark. Ricasso reverse stamped "186[illegible]". Blade 34 1/2 in., overall 42 1/2 in. long.
Complete in scabbard with an obvious approx. 5/8 in. depression near its second bracelet. A modern sticker affixed to the scabbard reads "Struck by a 'Minnie ball'," with an arrow pointing to the indentation. An accompanying label relates that the sword was found in an old house in Villa Rica, Georgia.
A fascinating, Minié ball bullet-struck relic. Despite the significance of the strike, the blade is easily removable from the scabbard and appears to have not been affected by the impact. The blade otherwise shows wear consistent with battlefield use.
