Marked on the reverse ricasso: "3". Obverse ricasso shows government stamping of “US,” as well as an inverted "17."
Widely used during the Civil War, the m1860 sabre was considered a lighter, more maneuverable weapon than its predecessor, the m1840 “Wristbreaker.” The light cavalry sabre weighed about 3 1/2 pounds in the scabbard.
