Related by consignor as an ancestor who served as a Captain in the 2nd Maine Cavalry which was stationed throughout Louisiana and the Department of the Gulf during their campaign and reportedly involved with the destruction of the Old Capitol.
5. (At center) Albumen CDV portrait of 1st Lieut. Almon C. Barnard, Co. D, 14th New York Infantry; Co. D, 11th Michigan Cavalry; and Co. D, 12th U.S. Colored Heavy Artillery.
6. (At right). Vignetted albumen CDV portrait of Lt. Col. Uri B. Pearsall, Co. H, 4th Wisconsin Cavalry and 99th USCT.
In 1862, the Union occupied Louisiana and used the State Capitol, the "old gray castle," as a prison and later as a garrison for African American troops under General Culver Grover. It caught fire twice when used as a garrison and was thereafter abandoned by the Union Army.
An interesting assemblage handsomely framed.
