Albumen full-length studio portrait CDV of Lottie Hough. New York: D. Appleton & Co., n.d. Photographer's imprint to mount verso. Pencil inscription to verso reads "Mrs Lotty Hough" and in a later hand "cotton smuggler."
Charlotte Hough (ca 1833-1896) was a popular comedic actress who helped Confederates smuggle cotton past Union blockades. Although known to be a Confederate supporter with rumors of her dancing upon burning American flags while touring in the South, she was also cordial with President Lincoln who admired her thespian skills, even inviting her to the White House.
