Kentucky regimental battleflag fragment. Hand-painted blue silk with gold bullion fringe. Visible 27 1/2 x 20 3/4 in., framed to 24 3/8 x 30 1/2 in.

A wartime flag fragment that features the tips of three arrows hand-painted in gold. Attributed to a Kentucky regiment, it was very likely from a flag using the regulation regimental colors with a spread-winged eagle grasping arrows. For example, a known image of the colors of the 22nd Kentucky Volunteer Infantry featured this design (c.f. "Colors of the 22d Regiment Kentucky Infty after the charge on Chickasaw Bluffs near Vicksburg, Miss - December 29th, 1862, Kentucky Historical Society), as well as the 39th Kentucky Mounted Infantry (c.f. Kentucky Military Museum).

Framed with a printed caption reading: "During the American Civil War Kentucky was officially recognized as a border state heralding brave sons for both the Union and Confederate cause. This portion of a flag is part of a Kentucky Union Regimental. After the war many flags were cut into pieces to be kept as mementos as was this one."

A fine wartime relic.
