Confederate cavalry saber, loosely patterned after the United States m1840 cavalry saber. [North Carolina]: [Louis Froelich], n.d. Blade 34 1/2 in. Overall 41 3/4 in. long.
These distinct Confederate edged weapons are known in collecting circles as "Kenansville," "Froelich" or "Confederate States Armory" sabers. Produced by Bavarian immigrant Louis Froelich, the swords are immediately recognizable by their pointed oval counterguards marked with Roman numeral bench numbers, smooth, unassuming pommels, and knucklebows which branch at two distinct points. This example is numbered "XXXI" to the counter guard and scabbard throat.
The sword is in overall very fine condition. The blade is relatively clean and the grip retains both the original dyed pig skin and single wire wrap. Perhaps most significantly, almost all of the original brown lacquer to the scabbard is present. The brand guard and scabbard mounts are all darkly patinated.
