Staff officer's sword. [North Carolina]: [Louis Froelich], n.d. Blade 16 7/8 in. Overall 22 in. long.

These distinct Confederate edged weapons are known in collecting circles as  "Kenansville," "Froelich" or "Confederate States Armory" staff officers' swords. Produced by Bavarian immigrant Louis Froelich, the swords are immediately recognizable by their pointed oval counterguards and knucklebows prominently reading "CSA". This example is not marked with a legible bench numeral.

The blade has undergone extensive period alteration; what is ordinarily an approx. 32 in. blade has been shortened to the length of a Bowie knife. The fuller has been tastefully reshaped to compliment the shorter blade.

There is a presence of rust and pitting across the blade. The single brass wrap and pig leather to the grip remain in fine condition. The guard is darkly patinated but approaches a lighter, warmer hue towards the pommel.
