A fantastic pair of flag relics from the regimental colors of the 28th Pennsylvania Infantry featuring a period ink inscription. Largest 10 9/16 x 1 1/4 in. Smallest 3 1/2 x 1 1/4 in.
Period Ink inscription to the larger fragment reads: "Part of the / 28th Regemental [sic] Flag / in the war of 1861."
Answering Lincoln's call for men at the very start of the war, a remarkable 15 companies were recruited and organized in Philadelphia in June 1861 under the command of Mexican War hero Colonel John Geary. They spent the first years of the war operating in the wilds of Virginia, especially Loudon County. In the fall of 1862, they joined Pope's Campaign in Northern Virginia, fighting at Second Bull Run (Manassas). In September, they engaged at the Battle of Antietam, where they were bloodied in the Cornfield.
1863 brought more heavy fighting. They participated in the Battle of Chancellorsville, where the regiment lost over a hundred casualties. At the Battle of Gettysburg, they were initially positioned on Little Round Top before moving to Culp's Hill to support the skirmish line. Following the victory, they moved to the west, fighting at the Battles of Lookout Mountain and Mission Ridge before joining Sherman's Atlanta Campaign and subsequent March to the Sea and Carolina Campaign. After fighting at the Battle of Bentonville and witnessing Johnston's surrender to Sherman, they returned to Washington, D.C. to participate in the Grand Review.
A very fine pair of flag relics from a hard-fought regiment of Pennsylvania volunteers.
