Nelson T. Dary was an 18-year-old carpenter when he enlisted on 15 June 1861 as a private in Company D of the 7th Massachusetts Infantry. He saw heavy action during the Peninsula Campaign, fighting at the Siege of Yorktown, the Battle of Williamsburg, the Seven Days Battles, and Antietam. Though no specific wound or disease is recorded, he was discharged for disability on 15 October 1862. After recuperation, he enlisted again on 28 December 1863 into the 3rd Massachusetts Cavalry. He moved to the Western Theater and joined the Red River Campaign before returning east to fight in Sheridan's Shenandoah Valley Campaign.

A finely engraved identification badge.
