A fine identification badge for a soldier in the First New York Cavalry Regiment, also known as the Lincoln Cavalry or the Sabre Regiment.
Featuring a name bar, left unengraved, with two crossed swords above a five-pointed star engraved with the regimental designation and another five-pointed star.
Organized in 1861, the regiment joined the Peninsula Campaign in the spring of 1862. They engaged in the Seven Days Battles and Antietam before joining the Defenses of the Upper Potomac. In 1864, they joined Sheridan's Valley Campaign fighting at Third Winchester, Fisher's Hill, Cedar Creeek, Newtown and Nineveh, Rude's Hill, the Raid to Gordonsville, Sheridan's Raid from Winchester, and the Battle of Waynesboro and Occupation of Staunton. They joined the Appomattox Campaign in late March 1865, fighting until Lee's surrender.
