OFFICER'S SWORD BELONGING TO JAMES R. SCOTT OF THE 18TH WISCONSIN, WITH THE REGIMENT AT THE BATTLE OF SHILOH

M1850 foot officer's sword. West Chelmsford, Massachusetts: C. Roby & Co. Ricasso reverse etched with maker's mark. Blade acid etched with floral and patriotic motifs. Underside of guard engraved with the name "James R. Scott". Approx. 37 1/2 in., blade approx. 31 3/4 in. Complete with leather scabbard.

An identified M1850 foot officer's sword in beautiful condition. The blade's etching retains its original "frosty" appearance, with only light pitting toward the tip. The brass on the guard and pommel also reflect a warm color, complementing the wire found around the grip's worn leather.

Inscribed beneath the guard is the name “James R. Scott.” Although several Union soldiers served under that name during the war, the only commissioned officer identified appears to be James R. Scott of Company G, 18th Wisconsin.

The 18th Wisconsin Infantry was organized in Milwaukee in early 1862 and served primarily in the Western Theater, where it saw hard service in some of the war’s most important campaigns. The regiment is best remembered for its severe losses at the Battle of Shiloh in April 1862, where many of its men were captured during the confused fighting around Prentiss’s line. It later took part in operations at Corinth, the Vicksburg Campaign, and the Chattanooga Campaign, before continuing on through the Atlanta Campaign and Sherman’s March. Like many Western regiments, the 18th Wisconsin experienced the full range of Civil War service, from battlefield combat and capture to long marches, garrison duty, and sustained campaigning across the South. Its record reflects both the heavy sacrifices of newly raised Union volunteer regiments and the central role Wisconsin troops played in securing Union victory in the West.
