.36 caliber. 7.5" barrel. SN: 114059 (mfg. ca. 1861). Originally blued and color casehardened finish, brass backstrap and triggerguard, one-piece smooth walnut grip. Single action percussion revolver with unfluted six-chamber cylinder, toggle link loading lever, hammer nose notch rear sight and brass post front sight. Barrel with one-line New York "U.S. America" barrel address. Visible numbers match, including the loading lever, wedge and cylinder arbor. Butt engraved EPC in a lovely period script. According to a letter from the original seller of the gun, the revolver was acquired at a South Carolina "church yard sale" and had family oral history identifying it to Ellison Capers. A binder of information including that letter accompanies the gun.
Ellison Capers (1837-1908), was born in Charleston, South Carolina, and a 27-year-old college professor residing in Columbia at the outbreak of the Civil War. He enlisted on 1 April 1862 as lieutenant colonel of the 24th South Carolina Infantry. He rose to colonel and was wounded at Franklin, Tennessee, on 30 November 1864. Capers was promoted to the rank of brigadier general in March of 1865 and was commissioned into the Confederate General and Staff shortly before the war’s end. After the conflict, Capers returned to Columbia, where he died in 1908. {ANTIQUE}
