General Gustavus Woodson Smith and Staff. Albumen composite photograph. [Richmond, Virginia: Vannerson & Jones], ca. 1866. Photographer's imprint and copyright printed to mount verso alongside two revenue stamps (red 2-cent and blue 3-cent). 5 3/4 x 7 1/8 in., mounted to 10 x 12 in.
A composite albumen featuring Confederate General Gustavus Woodson Smith (1821-1896), remembered for leading the Army of Northern Virginia for one day after Gen. Joseph E. Johnston was injured during the Battle of Seven Pines. Smith took command but his nerve broke, so Jefferson Davis replaced him with Robert E. Lee. Surrounding Smith are members of his staff including: W.S. Barton, Robert F. Beckham, Samuel Bassett French, E.S. Gaillard, William H. Hatch, Elijah Hawkins, Theodore W. Hoenenger, Horace J. Lacy, J.W. Melton, Samuel W. Melton, Robert F. Morris, and two men tentatively identified as Thomas Smith Rhett and W.H. Stevens.
