A pocket bible that belonged to Silas M. Fuller (1819-1895), who enlisted at the start of the war when he was 42 years old. He was commissioned as a Captain into Company K of the 4th Maine Infantry on 15 June 1861. Armed with Springfield smooth-bore muskets, they departed for Washington, joined the Army of the Potomac, and fought in the First Battle of Bull Run. Shortly after, Fuller was promoted to Major on September 15th, and again to Lieutenant Colonel on December 2nd. After several months, he resigned his commission, and returned home in March 1862. Fuller's regiment would go on to fight in many of the major battles of the Eastern Theater, including Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville, Gettysburg, the Wilderness, Spotsylvania Court House, and Cold Harbor.
