Fifth corps badge. Wool with cotton thread. Approx. 1 3/4 in. diam. With inscribed piece of paper identifying the badge belonging to a corps.

A handmade fifth corps badge. The Maltese cross has been delicately stitched in place and has remained over the years, no doubt showing someone's admiration for the unit.

The fifth corps was part of the Army of the Potomac during the Civil War. It was involved in several large conflicts, including the Battles of Antietam, Fredericksburg and Gettysburg, as well as the Siege of Petersburg. It was also famously led by Gen. George Meade through half of 1863, with his command ending just before the Battle of Gettysburg, upon which he took command of the Army of the Potomac.

[Civil War, Union, Confederate] [Relics, Militaria] [Medals, Corps Badges, Badges, Ribbons]

Some darkened spots from age.
