EXTREMELY RARE CIVIL WAR HALE ROCKET LAUNCHER

Rocket launcher. Iron tube with steel rods. [London, England]: William Hale. Bore diam. approx. 2 3/4 in. Tube length approx. 58 1/2 in. Steel rods approx. 36 5/8 in.

An unusual and rare Civil War weapon, this Hale rocket launcher represents one of the more experimental forms of mid-19th-century military technology. During the Civil War, Hale's rocket launchers were used primarily by the United States Navy to discharge 7- and 10-inch spin-stabilized rockets to distances of as much as 2,000 yards. The rockets themselves, often weighing approximately 60 pounds, were remembered as much for their terrifying glare and violent noise upon ignition as for their destructive capacity, lending them an outsized psychological effect on the battlefield and at sea.

The system was invented by William Hale (1797-1870), whose important 1844 patent introduced a major refinement to earlier rocket technology. Improving upon the Congreve system, Hale eliminated the cumbersome guide stick and instead diverted a portion of the rocket’s thrust through canted exhaust vents, imparting rotation in flight and thereby increasing stability. This innovation marked a significant step in the evolution of military rocketry, reflecting the era’s growing interest in self-propelled ordnance and more efficient battlefield deployment.

Although Hale rockets never achieved a reputation for precision, they nevertheless found real military application. They saw use in the Mexican-American War, were adopted by the British during the Crimean War, and appeared intermittently in conflicts around the world for roughly the next half century. In the American Civil War, their association with naval service is especially notable, where their incendiary spectacle and novel mechanics made them memorable instruments of war, even if not decisive ones.
