A cut signature from Lt. Gen. Ulysses S. Grant. While there is no confirmed date of the signature, it was likely to have been penned between 1864 and 1866, after his promotion following his victory at Chattanooga and before becoming general of the U.S. Army.
After proving victorious with the Chattanooga Campaign, Grant finished the Civil War commanding the Union army through several pivotal events, including the Overland Campaign, the Siege of Petersburg and notably the Appomattox Campaign, overseeing the Gen. Lee's surrender. Grant then served as the general of the U.S. Army during President Andrew Johnson's term before being sworn in as president himself in 1869.
