36-Star "Medallion" United States flag. circa 1865-1867. Cotton machine-sewn with 36 double appliquéd stars, and 13 machine-sewn stripes. With a canton design featuring a larger central star surrounded by two circles and 2-stars in all 4 corners. Hoist whip-stitched to cotton cord. Approx. 66 x 125 in., canton approx. 47 1/2 x 35 1/2 in.
A rare 36-star flag featuring a highly desirable and attractive double-ringed medallion star pattern in the canton. The flag became official after Nevada's admission to the Union in 1865. Celebrated on July 4th, the design was in service for only 2 years as Nebraska joined in 1867.
