M1850 staff and field officer's sword. Blade manufactured [Solingen, Germany]: N.p., n.d. Overall approx. 39 1/2 in., blade approx. 33 1/8 in. long.

The blade is acid etched, albeit light from wear, with the usual botanical motifs and flags; to its obverse, it features a Federal eagle and a U.S. shield and, to its ricasso, a brass "PROVED" disc.

An exemplary specimen of a regulation officer's sword in fine condition. Complete in steel scabbard with attractive chase work to the brass mounts, with a large US basket hilt, darkly patinated blade, brass elements with a uniform, flat patina, and the original shagreen grip with 12 wraps of double-strand wire, one strand twisted. The blade evidences period sharpening.
