Excavated Oval New Hampshire "NHSM" belt buckle. Die-stamped brass face, lead-filled, brass belt hooks. Approx 2 1/8 in. x 3 3/8 in. O'Donnell & Campbell 597. This buckle is affixed to a placard denoting its previous display in the "Gettysburg Battlefield Military Museum" from 1963 until 2024.
O'Donnell & Campbell and others note that the buckle was likely constructed for early post-war militia groups; however, recent scholarship has suggested they may have seen wartime use beginning in 1862.
