Sixth plate half-length studio portrait tintype. [Wisconsin], circa 1861-1865. Full leatherette case.
Portrait of a double-armed Union soldier, likely from Wisconsin. Clad in his blue frock, he appears to have three-piece state buttons on his uniform. To appear more warlike, the Yankee displays both a heavy revolver and bowie knife in his belt, which is secured with the classic brass oval "US" buckle. The photographer embellished his forage cap with the number "11" in gold gilt. Since this practice is almost exclusively related to soldiers from the Badger State, it is likely this soldier was a member of the 11th Wisconsin Infantry.
The 11th Wisconsin was raised at Madison in late 1861 and would go on to see hard fighting in the deep south, including action at Champion Hill, Vicksburg, and Fort Blakeley.
