Quarter plate tintype. Full leatherette case with desirable green velvet pad.
A fine portrait of a double-armed Yankee soldier posed in front of a painted camp scene backdrop. The young infantryman, clad in the typical issue clothing of a Union private and posed with a musket and sidearm, also enjoys his pipe for the photo.
This backdrop is of a type associated with the Army of the Potomac that certain photographers utilized in the winter months of 1863-1864. The subject's tarred leather rain cover over his forage cap and high leather boots certainly suggest bad weather. The plate itself is in excellent condition, with very good tone and clarity.
