A detailed depiction of a Zouvae soldier, standing relaxed with his hand resting upon his hip and a gun propped against his shoulder. Looking off to the side, the soldier squints his eyes as if to shield them from the sun. The soldier in a traditional blue and red Zouave military uniform, with a cap sat upon his blonde hair. A pack is strapped to his back, perhaps showing a soldier on the march.
The American traditional academic realistic painter, Don Troiani (b. 1949), is a well-known figure among historians and collectors alike. Known for evocative and historically accurate depictions of the Civil War and Revolutionary War, Troiani’s art exhibits fine craftsmanship and advanced topical research. Troiani took up his studies at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts and New York City’s Art Students League between 1967 and 1971, during which his detailed style of subjects was refined. Using a distinct oil and watercolor approach, his depictions of American soldiers are often outfitted with detailed examples of military uniforms, insignia, and weapons, which reflect the vast amount of research Troiani’s pieces exhibit. Troiani’s work serves as references in book compilations, illustrated guides, and reference materials, and is featured within museum and government publications.
