Double-edged spearpoint blade with median ridge, riveted wooden shaft. Stamped "CSA" beneath 11 stars to ricasso. Blade 12 in., overall 96 1/4 in.
Pikes stamped with "CSA" to the ricasso are thought to be manufactured in Richmond, Virginia, possibly by Boyle & Gamble.
Cheap and quick to produce, pikes were produced across the South as a way to crudely arm recruits when firearms were in short supply. Pikes and lances were rarely used among Federal regiments as they were only effective in a charge and generally cumbersome in rough and forested terrain.
