Pair of Confederate flag stud cufflinks. Engraved to Gen. Bradley Tyler Johnson. Brass, colored enamel. Face approx. 3/4 x 3/4 in. Overall l. approx. 3/4 in. Face reverse on one cufflink stamped with "Col. J". Weigh approx. # grams each.
A pair of cufflinks belonging to General Bradley Tyler Johnson (1829-1903). Comprised of brass and colored enamel, they depict the red and blue battle flag of the Confederate Army of Northern Virginia, further represented by the initials "A.N.V." Stamped on the reverse face of one cufflink is the identification of "Col. J." The toggles on both cufflinks are slightly bent from wear or age.
General Bradley Tyler Johnson served as a Brigadier General in the Confederate States Army, rising to command the Confederate 1st Maryland Infantry. Determined to stay loyal to his state and political leanings, Johnson declined a lieutenant colonel position for the state of Virginia, instead organizing and equipping a Maryland company at his own expense. The state of Maryland would remain a part of the Union throughout the duration of the Civil War, despite the influence of southern sympathies by some state natives.
