“15,000 CONFEDERATE VETERANS IN LINE,” HAND-COLORED PHOTOGRAPH OF A U.C.V. PARADE AT LEE CIRCLE, NEW ORLEANS

American, c. 1900–1910. Large albumen (or gelatin silver) print, delicately hand-colored in the period, mounted to the publisher’s gilt-ruled board with printed caption “15,000 Confederate Veterans in Line.” The composition shows mounted leaders of the United Confederate Veterans passing the Lee Monument at Lee Circle, New Orleans; Confederate battle flags are borne at center against the colonnaded monument and its eagle-topped pylons. Later newspaper clipping about the “Grand Parade and Review” affixed above; visible 13 3/4 x 9 1/4 in., attractively matted and housed in a period wooden frame measuring 21 1/2 x 17 1/8 in., (not examined out of frame).

Hand-colored parade prints of the U.C.V. are far less common than monochrome photographs and were intended as keepsake display pieces commemorating the immense veterans’ reunions that drew crowds to Southern cities in the early twentieth century. The present view, richly toned, with careful coloring of uniforms, horses, and flags, captures the ceremonial pageantry of the event at an emblematic site.
